Campus corner: Bellefonte’s Port captures third PSAC wrestling title

After a delayed start to his wrestling season due to an ankle injury, Mitchell Port has made up ground in a hurry.

The former PIAA champ from Bellefonte recently won his third PSAC title and is 7-0 and ranked second in the country at 141. In the dual meet with Iowa, which the Hawkeyes won 22-19. Port pinned 13th-ranked Josh Dziewa.

Port was NCAA runner-up last season.

In the dual dual meet against Iowa, teammate AJ Schopp, an ex-Tyrone standout, knocked off top-seeded Tony Ramos, 3-2 at 133. Schopp is also ranked second in the country, won his third PSAC crown and was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.


Ty Millward (State College, West Virginia) is 2-2 wrestling unattached at 149 pounds.


Brian Scholly (State College, Juniata) is averaging 14.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He also averages 1.1 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.1 blocks, Juniata is 6-1.

Kate McDonald (State College, Juniata) averages 20.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game to go with 4.3 assists, 3.3 steals and 0.9 blocks. She leads the team in points, rebounds and steals and was named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week after scoring 28 points in 29 minutes in a win over Eastern. Juniata is 5-2.

Dennis Fisher (Bald Eagle Area, Juniata) averages 1.6 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.1 steals and 0.1 blocks per game.

Jena Matter (Bellefonte, Mansfield) averages 11.7 points and a 6.7 rebounds per game. She also has 13 assists and 13 steals. Mansfield is 0-7.

Brittany Butterworth (BEA, Pitt-Greensburg) averages 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds to go with nine assists and four steals. Pitt-Greensburg is 3-4.

Taylor Allison (State College, St. Francis) has appeared in three games but recorded no stats. St. Francis is 2-5.

Jenna Altomare (State College, Kutztown) is averaging 4.7 points, 0.3 rebounds, 0.3 assists and has three steals. Kutztown is 4-3.

Kyle Kanaskie (State College, Truman State) has a 10.0 scoring average to go with a 3.8 rebounding average, 15 assists and six steals. Truman State is 5-0.

Kaitlyn Miller (BEA, PSU-Fayette) averages 12.5 points and 11.0 rebounds as well as 1.8 blocks, 0.8 assists and 0.2 steals. Fayette is 5-4.

Mary Pillot (BEA, PSU-DuBois) scored 19 points and had eight rebounds against PSU-Hazelton, 11 points and four rebounds against PSU-Wilkes-Barre and had 10 points against PSU Scranton-Worthington. DuBois is 2-7.


Sam Rodgers (State College, Syracuse) remains the long snapper for the 6-6 Orangemen who will play Minnesota in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 27.

Jon Cox (State College, Franklin & Marshall) finished the season with 10 solo tackles, 10 assists, and a sack as a defensive lineman for the Diplomats. F&M finished off a 7-4 season with a 38-14 victory over Delaware Valley in the ECAC Southeast Bowl.


Suzanne Horner (State College, Mississippi State) had 48 kills, 978 assists, 32 aces, 194 digs and 34 blocks. The Lady Bulldogs finished 12-20.


Joe Woodman (State College, Massachusetts) made a big impact at the recent Terrier Invitational. The transfer won the 500 and 1,650 freestyle and placed third in the 200. His 56 individual points helped the Minutemen place third in the event.

Alex Hillsley (State College, Delaware) helped the Blue Hen 200 freestyle relay team place eighth and 200 medley relay team take ninth at the Bucknell Invitational.

Sam Eaton (State College, Dickinson) won the 100 breaststroke and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team as Dickson topped Messiah 124-78.
