The Penn State men’s volleyball team went the distance against UCLA before falling in its season-opening match in five sets Thursday night in the opening match of the Outrigger Invitational.
Aaron Russell turned in a 19-kill, nine-dig performance for the No. 11 Nittany Lions in the 25-15, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 16-14 loss. Nick Goodell added 13 kills, Peter Russell had 12 kills and Matt Seifert posted nine kills and three blocks. Taylor Hammond gave out 54 assists and Connor Curry posted 17 digs.
Robert Page’s 23 kills and five blocks paced the No. 7 Bruins (1-1), while Chambersburg native Mitch Stahl added 11 kills Gonzalo Quiroga had 15 kills, Spencer Rowe recorded seven blocks and Trent Kersten had six blocks.
UCLA had a 15.5-4.5 blocking advantage as the Nittany Lions hit .213 with 31 hitting errors. Penn State faces tournament host Hawaii at midnight Friday.
