Campus Corner: Bellefonte’s Matter lone bright spot for Mansfield basketball

Bellefonte graduate Jena Matter is one of the few bright spots for the Mansfield University’s women’s basketball team this season.

A 6-foot senior center, Matter leads the team in scoring with a 14.2 average. She also averages 7.1 rebounds per game to go along with 29 assists, 28 steals and two blocked shots.

Mansfield is 0-17.


Brian Scholly (State College, Juniata) has a 13.4 scoring average and also averages 5.3 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists, .3 steals and .3 rebounds. Juniata is 11-4.

Kate McDonald (State College, Juniata) continues to average a double-double with 17.9 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. She also has 51 assists, 54 steals and 16 blocked shots. Juniata is 7-8.

Dennis Fisher (BEA, Juniata) averages 1.8 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.1 steals and 0.3 rebounds.

Brittany Butterworth (BEA, Pitt-Greensburg) has a 3.2 scoring averages. She has 29 rebounds, 17 assists and 13 steals. Greensburg is 7-7.

Taylor Allison (State College, St. Francis) has a 0.6 scoring average and has two rebounds and one steal. St. Francis is 4-12.

Jenna Altomare (State College, Kutztown) averages 6.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists and has 11 steals. Kutztown is 6-10.

Kyle Kanaskie (State College, Truman State) averages 7.1 points per game. He has 48 rebounds, 38 assists and 12 steals. Truman State is 12-3.

Kaitlyn Miller (BEA, PSU-Fayette) averages 12.1 points, 11.4 rebounds, .8 assists, .5 steals and 1.9 blocks per game. Fayette is 7-6.

Mary Pillot (BEA, PSU-DuBois) had 16 points against Penn State Schuylkill, five points against Penn State Greater Allegheny and 10 points against Penn State-Beaver. Penn State-DuBois is 4-10.

Maddie Bastress (Penns Valley, Washington and Jefferson) averages 0.7 points and has nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. W&J is 10-5.


Sam Eaton (State College, Dickinson) swam on the winning 200 medley relay team which posted a time of 1:39.30 against McDaniel and also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle in 24.10.

Joe Woodman (State College, UMass) finished third in the 200 freestyle in a dual meet against Bryant. No time was given.


Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, Edinboro) raised his record to 18-0 with a 4-1 win over Lock Haven’s Dan Neff last week. Port is ranked No. 1 in the country at 141 pounds. Edinboro is 5-3.

JB Holden (State College, PSU Mont Alto) went 3-2 in his first week of collegiate competition. The freshman is competing at 149 pounds.

Indoor Track

John Crowe (State College, Susquehanna) was sixth in the 3,000 meters in 9:02.44 in the Orange and Maroon Classic.

Colby Brindle (State College, Susquehanna) was on the 4x200 relay team that placed fourth in 11:33.80 in the Orange and Maroon Classic.
