Centre County League Baseball: Lemont’s defense of crown off to rough start

The defending champions’ tough start to the Centre County League season continued on Sunday.

The Lemont Ducks (1-4) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Pleasant Gap at The Pond. The Ducks were sloppy early and often, committing a total of seven errors on the afternoon. The Peppers won 9-8 in Game 1 and took Game 2 10-5.

Devon Alterio earned the win for Pleasant Gap in Game 1 and Tyler Jones pitched the Peppers to a Game 2 win. Kevin Tate led the Peppers with four hits — two in each game — in the twinbill. Kieran Kempton notched two doubles in Game 1 for the Ducks.

Howard 9-7,

Spring Mills 5-1

The Hawks kept rolling on Sunday.

Howard (4-1) swept a doubleheader with Spring Mills, coming on late in both games to secure its wins. The Hawks posted eight combined runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take Game 1 9-5. The Hawks got a seven-run fifth in Game 2 to beat the Braves 7-1.

Brian Pelka and Tyler Womer earned wins on the afternoon for the Hawks while Dan Cole led the Howard offense. Cole picked up two singles in Game 1 and then added a double and a single in Game 2. Mike Vogt and Brady Waltz notched two singles apiece for Spring Mills in Game 1.

Blanchard 7-10, Philipsburg 17-2

PHILIPSBURG It was a tale of two different games in Blanchard and Philipsburg’s doubleheader on Sunday.

The Pirates opened the twinbill with a rout of the Bees 17-7 in six innings, while Blanchard got its revenge by striking a victory 10-2 in the nightcap.

Philipsburg was down 7-2 heading into the fifth inning of the first game. The Pirates scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning and then kept the bats alive for the bottom of the sixth where they scored nine more.

The Bees used a six run third inning in order to blow open the second game. Blanchard held a 9-1 lead after three innings.
