Penn State women’s soccer: North Carolina stops Nittany Lions in 2OT

In a rematch of the 2012 National Championship match, goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom put on a stellar performance in goal but No. 8 Penn State fell 1-0 to No. 14 North Carolina 1-0 in double overtime Friday.

Amber Munerlyn broke free of the Nittany Lion defense to convert a feed from Joanna Boyles 2:07 into the second overtime — 102:07 into the game — for the evening’s only score.

Eckerstrom posted a career-high 10 saves in the loss. Her counterparts, Bryane Heaberlin and Lindsey Harris, combined for three saves and the shutout.

The Tar Heels finished with a 23-15 shot advantage, including 6-2 during the extra frames. Penn State meets Duke on Sunday.
