Brian Pelka nearly opened the Centre County Baseball League season in style Sunday afternoon, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Howard Hawks’ 1-0 victory over Spring Mills.
Still, it took some late-game dramatics to finally earn the win, with the only run scored in the bottom of the seventh as Tyler Myers also pitching a strong game for the Braves.
With the bases loaded and one out, Joe Pillot’s ground ball to third was just enough to score pinch rinner Dave Gardner, with the throw home off the mark and ending the game.
Pelka struck out eight, walked just one and didn’t give up a hit until Micah Shrenkle’s single in the seventh.

Matching Pelka on the mound was Myers, who also struck out eight, walked one and surrendered six hits in the complete-game loss.
