Ohio State’s Stieber, Maryland’s Cummings named Big Ten’s best of year

Ohio State’s Logan Stieber and Maryland’s Taylor Cummings were named the Big Ten’s Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Tuesday.

The pair combined to rack up four individual national championships, three NCAA team titles, seven All-America honors, four individual Big Ten Championships and 13 individual postseason conference awards during their careers.

Stieber was named the Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year after becoming the first wrestler in Big Ten history and the fourth in NCAA history to earn four individual national championships, earning the Dan Hodge Trophy as the nation’s top wrestler. he closed his career on a 50-match win streak, and helped the Buckeyes to their first NCAA team title.

In Maryland’s firsr season in the conference, she is the Terrapins’ first winner of the top female honor. The three-time All-American won the Tewaaraton and Honda awards this spring as the nation’s top lacrosse player. She had 37 assists and 100 points this past season in leading the Terps to their second straight national championship.

Each of the Big Ten’s 14 members had one male and female nominee for the award, that has been given annually since 1982. Penn State’s nominees were wrestler Matt Brown and women’s volleyball player Micha Hancock.
