District 5 11-12 Major Little League Tournament: Bellefonte, Philipsburg, Bald Eagle Area open with victories

Bellefonte outlasted State College National 6-3 in nine innings Friday in its opening game of the Little League baseball District 5, 11-12 Major Tournament.

Bellefonte scored two runs on two throwing errors to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth. Seth Shuey hit his second home run of the game to push Bellefonte’s lead to three runs.

Bobby Marsh earned the win, and Nick Capparelle, Nick Kreger and Clayton McClelland each had two hits for Bellefonte.

State College National scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie it 3-3.

Philipsburg rolls

Ryan Whitehead and Anthony Merryman combined for 11 strikeouts in Philipsburg’s 10-0 victory over Moshannon Valley in four innings Friday.

Merryman finished with a double, a single and drove in four runs. Whitehead and Caleb Pellerite both hit home runs. Nathan Guetskey hit a double.

BEA wins in extras

Bald Eagle Area edged Four Leaf Clover 7-6 in seven innings Friday.

Michael Lefebvre earned the win for Bald Eagle Area. BEA’s David Close had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run. Myles Stover had two RBIs, and Tommy Snyder had a double for Bald Eagle Area.

The tournament continues Sunday.
