With the two teams combining for 25 runs and 25 hits, the Philipsburg Pirates took the opening game of a Centre County Baseball League semifinal playoff series with the Pleasant Gap Peppers 16-9 Sunday.
The second game of the best-of-five series will be played Tuesday evening at Bellefonte’s Governor’s Park.
The Pirates surged into the lead with nine runs over the first three innings, then, after spotting seven runs to the Peppers in the top of the fifth to tie the game 9-9, responded with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to put the win away.
Josh Potter earned the win in the game at Philipsburg-Osceola High School.

AJ Robinson delivered the big blow for the Pirates with a home run and three RBIs. Travis Arnold added three hits including a double and two RBIs, Brandon Myers doubled and knocked in two runs, Brandon Quay had two hits and three RBIs, Drew Bryan had a single and double along with three RBIs, Jake Belinda and Nate Kerlin each had a single and double plus two RBIs, and Derek Shaw singled and doubled with one run batted in.
Tyler James had three hits and two RBIs, Zach Moerschbacher also plated two runs, and those two Peppers, along with Devin Alterio, Dan Roan and Trey Burger, all stroked doubles.
Jon Romine took the loss.
