Quartet of Penn State golfers open U.S. amateur

Penn State golfers Ryan Dornes, J.D. Hughes (a transfer who will be eligible to play in 2016-17), Geoff Vartelas and Chris Houston teed off in the 116th U.S. Amateur on Monday at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan.

After the first day of play, Vartelas led the Nittany Lions’ contingent with a 68, which stands tied for 14th place.

Sending four members to the championship is a program-record for Penn State.

The U.S. Amateur includes 36 holes of stroke play qualifying Monday and Tuesday, followed by match play for the top 64 golfers from Wednesday through Sunday. A total of 312 golfers are participating.
