Maryland holds off Penn State field hockey, clinches share of Big Ten title

From CDT staff reports

The No. 5 Penn State field hockey team’s comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss to No. 6 Maryland on Sunday.

After Maryland’s Grace Balsdon scored to push her team ahead 5-2 at the 58:05 mark, Katie Dembrowski and Aurelia Meijer scored back-to-back goals to pull the Nittany Lions within one goal.

But the Terrapins held off the Nittany Lions for the win, clinching at least a share of the Big Ten title. Maryland improved to 6-1 in conference play, while Penn State fell to 4-2.

Meijer finished with three assists to go with her goal to lead the Nittany Lions offensively. Brooke Birosik and Madison Morano also had goals for Penn State.

Penn State goalie Jenny Rizzo made four saves.

The Nittany Lions (12-2) return to action at Rutgers at 3 p.m. Friday.
