Men’s golf
Huntzinger pacing Penn State men’s golf for tourney lead
With Charles Huntzinger leading the way, the Penn State men’s golf team is ahead of the field at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate tournament.
Huntzinger matched his career low and the tournament’s single-round record by firing an 8-under 64 in the second round, racing up to a tie for second place Saturday at the Blackthorn Club at The Ridge. The tournament’s defending champion has an 11-under total.
The Nittany Lions posted a 16-under 272 team total and are 27 under through two rounds. The final round is set for Sunday.
First-round leader JD Hughes carded an eagle on his way to a 69 for a 9-under total and is tied for fourth. Cole Miller and Ryan Dornes are tied for 18th at 3 under.
Women’s volleyball
Penn State sweeps Michigan
UNIVERSITY PARK The biggest Rec Hall crowd of the season saw Penn State sweep away Michigan 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 on Saturday evening.
Simone Lee put down 15 kills and Haleigh Washington added 12 kills on error-free .571 hitting for the No. 2 Nittany Lions (17-1, 7-1), who have won seven straight and are tied for the Big Ten lead with Nebraska and Michigan State.
Abby Detering and Bryanna Weiskircher gave out 21 and 20 assists, respectively, to guide Penn State to .394 hitting, Kendall White picked up 13 digs while Ali Frantti added 11 digs and nine kills and Tori Gorrell posted three blocks in front of 4,610 fans.
Penn State vists Purdue on Friday.
Men’s soccer
MSU blanks Nittany Lions
EAST LANSING, Mich. Penn State lost its sixth straight game Saturday, falling 1-0 to No. 6 Michigan State.
Ryan Sierakowski scored the lone goal at the 29:41 mark to lift the Spartans to victory. Penn State failed to record one shot on goal in the loss, so Michigan State goalie Jimmy Hague didn’t need to make a save in the shutout.
Penn State’s Josh Levine made four saves.
The Nittany Lions (2-9-2) return to action at Rutgers on Oct. 22.
Men’s hockey
Gophers’ Bristedt suspended
ROSEMONT, Ill. Minnesota’s Leon Bristedt has been suspended by the Big Ten for Sunday’s game against Penn State.
The conference leveled the discipline after a hit the forward delivered in Friday’s 3-1 Nittany Lion win. The senior forward delivered a hard hit from behind on Penn State’s James Gobetz at 8:47 of the second period. Bristedt was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit.
The teams meet at 4 p.m. Sunday at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Women’s hockey
Penn State falls to Clarkson
UNIVERSITY PARK Penn State got off to a slow start in a 2-0 loss to Clarkson on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions managed just one shot in the first period, while Clarkson took an early lead on a goal by Michaela Pejzlova. Loren Gabel scored the defending national champions’ second goal in the third period.
Daniela Paniccia finished with 26 saves for the Nittany Lions, who were outshot 28-13.
Penn State (1-4-1) faces Merrimack on the road at 7 p.m. Friday.
Men’s swimming
Virginia edges Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK Kaelan Freund won three individual events to lead Penn State, but the Nittany Lions fell 151-149 to No. 22 Virginia on Saturday.
Freund finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.71) to go with wins in the 100 breaststroke (54.20) and 200 breaststroke (2:00.34). Freund also contributed to the Nittany Lions first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Liam Veregin was on the 200 medley relay team, placed first in the 100 backstroke (48.48) and finished second in the 200 backstroke (1:48.01). Gabe Castano won the 50 free (21.05), Nathan Schiffman took first in the 200 free (1:39.63) and Hector Garcia Boissier won the 1-meter dive.
Penn State takes on Duke and North Carolina State on the road Friday.
Women’s swimming
Virginia tops PSU in Lions’ opener
UNIVERSITY PARK Virginia topped Penn State 184-104 at McCoy Natatorium in the Nittany Lions’ season opener.
The Nittany Lions picked up wins from Stephanie Szekely (1,000-yard freestyle, 10:09.11), Jane Donahue (200 individual medley, 2:03.83) and Maddie Hart (100 butterfly, 55.99). They also posted a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 free relay with Niki Price, Camryn Barry, Tommie Dillione and Katrina Kuhn capturing the win in 3:25.38.
The Nittany Lions visit Duke and North Carolina State on Friday.
