PSU drops season-opening games
GULF SHORES, Ala. The Penn State softball team dropped its opening games of the season Friday, falling in five innings to No. 11 Alabama 10-0 and then dropping a 3-1 decision to Virginia Tech at the Sand Dollar Classic.
Madison Preston pitched a one-hit shutout for the Crimson Tide, allowing two walks, hitting a batter and giving up only a first-inning single to Tori Dubois. Gabby Callaway had a double, triple and four RBIs for Alabama. Jessica Cummings took the loss.
In the loss to the Hokies, Penn State’s Destiny Weber was 2 for 3, and Delaney Elling scored the lone Nittany Lion run on a fourth-inning error. A three-run fifth inning off Cummings lifted Virginia Tech.
Penn State has two more games set for Saturday, facing Mississippi and Georgia Tech.
Nittany Lions overpower Buckeyes
COLUMBUS, Ohio No. 7 Penn State won a showdown with No. 8 Ohio State at St. John Arena, 417.400-414.900. The Nittany Lions’ team total is the second-best mark in the nation this season.
The Nittany Lions managed to take the top spots in only two of the six events, with Josh Smith scoring a 14.650 on the floor exercise and Sam Zakutney posting a 14.800 on the parallel bars.
Penn State heads to Las Vegas on Thursday to take part in the Winter Cup.
Tsang has strong day in PSU loss to Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio Briannah Tsang had the top marks in the floor exercise and in the all-around, but Penn State fell 196.200-196.025 to Ohio State.
Tsang posted a 9.875 in the floor, matching teammate Sabrina Garcia, and finished with a 39.325 total. Tsang also was second on the balance beam behind Garcia’s 9.925. Gianna LaGuardia won the vault at 9.875 for the other event win for the Nittany Lions, who return home to Rec Hall next Saturday to host Cornell and Pennsylvania.
Nittany Lions, Lakers left in knot
ERIE Penn State skated to a 1-1 tie with Mercyhurst.
Irene Kiroplis netted her first goal of the season for Penn State, while Maggie Knott scored for the Lakers. Hannah Ehresmann made 24 saves in the Nittany Lion net, and the teams meet again Saturday.
Penn State splits first 2 rounds at Big Ten Match Play
PALM COAST, Fla. Penn State posted a 1-1 record after the first round of action at the Big Ten Match Play at Hammock Beach Resort.
The Nittany Lions dropped their opener 5-1 to Indiana, with the only win posted by Ryan Dornes, swashbuckling his way past Jack Sparrow 4 and 2. Penn State then topped Rutgers 5 1/2 to 1/2, with wins from Dornes, Alec Bard, Cole Miller, Charles Huntzinger and Daniel Martinez.
Penn State will face Michigan State in the third round Saturday morning.
PSU men, women score academic honors
NEW ORLEANS With team grade-point averages of 3.48 for the women and 3.04 for the men, Penn State picked up NCAA Division I Cross Country Team Academic Awards from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Individual academic awards went to Greta Lindsley, Kathryn Munks, Jillian Hunsberger, Alison Willingmyere, Colin Albert and Tim McGowan.
