Few wrestling figures are as intriguing and engaging as Minnesota's J Robinson.
Fortunately, Robinson isn't going anywhere in the near future. Minnesota announced that Robinson has signed a contract extension through 2014. That's good news for everybody involved with the sport.
Robinson excels in a difficult situation -- many high schools have better practice facilities than the Golden Gophers -- and his ability to see beyond the room has impacted countless youth wrestlers and fans. Robinson's opinion might peeve some. But reporters, including this one, appreciate his accessibility and honesty. Every sport needs a coach or two who adds spice.
Robinson has led Minnesota to three national championships, an amazing feat considering Iowa and Oklahoma State's dominance. Robinson promotes the sport through a variety of ways, including his highly successful camps, and his efforts help the Golden Gophers attract some of the nation's best recruits. Minnesota falls into the small category of teams with the potential to regularly contend for national titles.
This is the first multi-year deal of Robinson's career, according to a Minnesota release. Robinson, the Golden Gophers' coach since 1986, had been working on a year-to-year basis. The deal was long overdue. Coaches of Robinson's stature deserve the security of multi-year deal.
