Penn State’s stay at No. 1 will be a short one.
Iowa won six bouts and received a pin from 125-pounder Matt McDonough to hand the Nittany Lions their first wrestling loss 22-13 on Sunday at Rec Hall. The eighth-ranked Hawkeyes (11-0-1) extended their unbeaten streak to 73 meets.
Iowa took a 12-0 lead as Tony Ramos and Montell Marion followed McDonough’s pin with narrow victories. Ramos edged Andrew Long 3-2 at 133 and Marion rallied to defeat Andrew Alton 11-9 at 141. Penn State, which dropped to 13-1, received victories from Frank Molinaro (149), David Taylor (157), Ed Ruth (171) and Cameron Wade (285). Taylor gave Penn State its only bonus point by majoring Derek St. John 12-4.
