State College's rise as a freestyle wrestling hotbed continued as Nittany Lion Wrestling Club athletes Teyon Ware and Jake Varner won their weight classes at the U.S. Open in Cleveland.
Ware captured the 66-kilogram title with an 0-1, 5-0, 1-1 victory over former Lock Haven and Penn State star Cary Kolat. Ware, who wrestled at Oklahoma, has spent the past two seasons training with the NLWC.
Varner defeated Dan Erekson 7-0, 5-0 to win the 96-kilogram title. Varner joined the NLWC after winning two NCAA titles at Iowa State.
NLWC heavyweight Aaron Anspach, a NCAA finalist at Penn State, finished fifth at 120 kilograms. Anspach and fellow NLWC heavyweight Les Sigman both lost in the semifinals.
