Southern Scuffle headed to Chattanooga

The Southern Scuffle has been saved.

According to the Chattanooga Times News, the Southern Scuffle is moving from Greensboro, N.C., to Chattanooga, Tenn. UNC Greensboro’s decision to drop wrestling earlier this spring raised questions about the event’s future.

The Southern Scuffle has grown into one of the nation’s top regular-season collegiate wrestling tournaments. Penn State and Cornell tied for last year's title. The teams finished first and second at the NCAA Championships.

Chattanooga’s aggressive effort to obtain the tournament represents needed good news for wrestling. Three Division I programs -- UNC Greensboro, Cal-Fullerton and Liberty -- have been dropped this spring.

Losing the Southern Scuffle, which rivals the Midlands as the top holiday tournament, would have been another blow to the sport.
