Notes: These teams must be sick of each other. They are meeting for the ninth time. The Scrappers hold a 5-3 series lead, but the Spikes had an uplifting victory Wednesday, as they blew a 4-2 lead in ninth yet recovered to win 5-4 in 10 innings. Carlos Mesa hit the game-winning homer, tying him with Justin Bencsko for the team lead with two. The Spikes’ eight homers is a league low. Lowell, by contrast, leads the league with 31. Mahoning Valley catchers Jake Lowery (fourth, 2011) and Alex Lavisky (eighth, ‘10), infielders Tony Wolters (third, ‘10), and outfielders Bryson Myles (sixth, ‘11) and Jordan Smith (ninth, ‘11) were selected in the first 10 rounds of the past two drafts. First baseman Alex Dickerson (third, ‘11) is the only State College position player selected in a single-digit round. Benedict allowed four hits and one run in five innings against the Scrappers on June 29. Nixon allowed six hits and three runs in six innings against the Spikes on June 30.
