July 29 Spikes pregame notes

State College Spikes at Tri-City ValleyCats

When: 7:05 p.m., tonight

Where: Bruno Stadium, Troy, N.Y.

Pitching matchup: SC -- Ryan Hafner (0-2, 3.34); TC -- Kyle Hallock (2-2, 2.12)

Notes: Hallock, a 10th-round draft pick from Kent State, has started his professional career strong, lasting five or more innings in all six of his professional starts. Hallock pitched a career-high seven innings against Lowell on July 1. Hallock’s pitching coach is Gary Ruby, who worked as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ minor league pitching coordinator from 2002-07. Ruby lives near Scranton. The ValleyCats are the defending New York-Penn League champions. Only three players -- infielder Jacke Healey, catcher Ryan McCurdy and pitched Joan Belliard -- played in Tri-City last year. Healey attended District 2 Lackawanna Trail High School and played at Youngstown State. Spikes outfielder Wes Freeman has collected hits in five of his past six games to raise his batting average from .197 to .226.
