Aug. 3 Spikes pregame notes

State College Spikes (15-30) at Vermont Lake Monsters (24-20)

When: 7:05 p.m. tonight

Where: Centennial Field, Burlington, Vt.

Pitching matchup: SC -- Ryan Hafner (0-3, 3.41); V -- J.C. Menna (2-3, 5.04)

Notes: The Spikes offense has progressed since sputtering early. Last night’s nine-hit effort raised the team batting average to .227. That average stood at .209 on July 9. The Spikes lead the league with 17 triples. Taylor Lewis and Kirk Singer have five each. This marks Vermont’s first year as an Oakland Athletics affiliate. The Lake Monsters hold a 4 ½ game lead over Lowell in the Stedler Division standings. Vermont’s roster doesn’t include a slew of high draft picks. Outfielder Bobby Crocker is a third-round pick from Cal-Poly. He recently agreed to terms and has appeared in just three games. Dusty Robinson, an outfielder from Fresno State, is the next highest ‘11 pick on the roster. Robinson was selected in the 10th round.
