Pirates second-round draft pick joining Spikes

Pittsburgh Pirates second-round draft pick Josh Bell will join the State College Spikes before Wednesday’s game against Batavia at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Pittsburgh Pirates director of player development Kyle Stark said that Bell, an outfielder from Dallas Jesuit High School, is expected to workout with the team. Bell’s role will be similar to 2010 first- and second-rounders Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, who joined the Spikes late last season to acclimate themselves to professional baseball. Neither Taillon nor Allie pitched before the 2010 New York-Penn League season concluded.

Stark said the Pirates haven’t determined if Bell will be added to active roster before Sunday’s season finale at Williamsport. The Pirates signed Bell for a second-round record $5 million earlier this month.
