State College-Strong Vincent preview capsule

No. 4 State College (6-4) vs. No. 2 Strong Vincent (8-2)

When: 1 p.m. Saturday

Where: Memorial Stadium, Clarion University

Series: State College leads 1-0

Last meeting: State College won 35-7 in last year’s district semifinal

The skinny: State College coach Al Wolski detests Saturday afternoon games. But he can’t argue with the Little Lions’ afternoon results since the PIAA instituted this sub-regional in 2008. State College is 2-0 against Erie-area teams, defeating McDowell 22-10 in 2010 and 16-7 in 2009. DuBois hosted both of those games. ...Strong Vincent is part of the City of Erie’s public school system. The district features open enrollment, with students receiving the option of attending Strong Vincent, Erie East and Central Tech. Strong Vincent is the football school. The Colonels won the 1991 PIAA Class AAA title. They reached the PIAA Class AAA semifinals in 2007. ...After allowing 132 points in its first three games, State College’s defense has tightened. The Little Lions are allowing 20.2 points per game since the rough start. Defensive linemen David Gordeuk and Jon Cox and linebacker Brian Laskowski are flourishing as seniors. Did we spot workhorse running back Jack Haffner playing linebacker last week? Our eyes aren’t getting that weary.

Key matchup: State College’s passing offense vs. Strong Vincent’s passing defense — Something tells us State College quarterback Josh Weakland, who has only attempted 19 passes the past two weeks, is primed for a big afternoon.

Up next: Winner faces University Prep or Allderdice in next week’s PIAA first round at time and site to be determined
