State College-University Prep set for Saturday

The State College football team will open the PIAA Class AAAA playoffs on District 6 turf.

The Little Lions meet University Prep at noon, Saturday at Altoona’s Mansion Park. The game marks State College’s first at Mansion Park since defeating Central Mountain in last year’s District 6-9-10 Class AAAA final.

State College (7-4) qualified for the state playoffs by defeating Strong Vicent 42-31 in last weekend’s district final. University Prep defeated Allderdice 14-0 to claim the Pittsburgh City League title. University Prep (10-1) is a first-year football program that uses players multiple city schools, including the former Peabody and Schenley high schools.

The winner faces the WPIAL champion in next week’s PIAA quarterfinals. North Allegheny and Upper St. Clair play in Saturday night’s WPIAL final at Pittsburgh Heinz Field.

Two other games are scheduled for Mansion Park this weekend. Tyrone meets Richland for the District 6 Class AA title at 7 p.m. Friday. Bellwood-Antis plays Penns Manor for the District 6 Class A title at 7 p.m. Saturday.
