Natural gas and baseball

Get ready for the natural gas industry’s invasion into local sports business.

The Altoona Curve and Peoples Natural Gas announced an agreement changing Blair County Ballpark’s name to Peoples Natural Gas Field. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team.

The team and company plan to study ways to implement more green technology into the ballpark, according to the agreement. Peoples Natural Gas provides energy to more than 350,000 homes and businesses in 16 western Pennsylvania counties.

The natural gas boom could lead to future partnerships between teams and natural gas companies. The City of Williamsport is exploring the possibility of attaching naming rights to Bowman Field. The city is using former Harrisburg mayor Stephen Reed as a consultant. The natural gas industry has turned Williamsport into one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas.

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park’s name is safe because of Anthony Lubrano’s donation to Penn State. But natural gas companies could compete for outfield signage.

The Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Binghamton (N.Y.) Mets are other Minor League Baseball teams in the Marcellus Shale region. The Yankees are playing home games in multiple East Coast cities this season because of ballpark renovations.
