Penn State women’s golf team brings back tournament title

The Penn State women’s golf team captured its second straight tournament title, grabbing first place in the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate over the weekend, and earned Golfweek Team of the Week in the process.

The Nittany Lions, who are now ranked No. 1 statistically according to based on their season statistics, edged tournament host Tennessee by four strokes in finishing with a final-round 1-under 287 and a team total of 3-over 867 at Holston Hills Country Club. Penn State has an average score of 73.75 to earn the golfstat No. 1 ranking.

Ellen Ceresko and Emily Ransone led the Nittany Lions in tying for seventh place with even-par 216s. Ceresko fired a final-round 70 while Ransone carded a 74 on the final day. Teammate Katlyn Elliott wasn’t far behind, tying for 11th at 218, although she was competing individually and not included in the team total. Tying for 15th were Elyse Archambault and Catherine Herrera at 3-over 219 and Christina Vosters rounded out the lineup, tying for 30th at 223.

“This was a fantastic victory for this team,” said coach Denise St. Pierre, whose team won its Nittany Lion Invitational at the end of September. “We played so well against 16 good teams, with many of them being ranked ahead of us. This certainly is one of the top wins for the history of Penn State golf.”

Purdue’s Paula Reto won with a 5-under 211.

The Nittany Lions head to Las Vegas next weekend to close their fall schedule.
