The No 15 Penn State men’s lacrosse team used a big third quarter to put away No. 9 Denver 15-12 at Everbank Field in the Moe’s Southwest Grill Classic on Sunday.
Shane Sturgis and Jack Forster each netted four goals for the Nittany Lions (2-0) on the home field of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
“(The win) is huge. It is the second game of the year and beating a top 10 opponent in Denver who has been deep in the tournament before,” Forster said. “We’re taking the next step here at Penn State. We have Notre Dame next and we go back to work tomorrow. Notre Dame is No. 3 in the country and we need to keep rolling from here.”
Leading by two goals at halftime, Penn State used a 7-3 run in the third quarter to take command. Sturgis, Forster and freshman TJ Sanders each scored twice in the frame. Sanders finished with three goals.
Kyle Zittle added two goals and Tom LaCrosse and Michael Richards each netted one. LaCrosse, Kyle VanThof, Sammy Davis and Nick Dolik each had an assist.
Wes Berg and Eric Law each had three goals for the Pioneers (1-1), Jeremy Noble and Cameron Flint netted two apiece and one each came from Eric Adamson and Colin Woolford.
Austin Kaut made 10 saves in goal for the Nittany Lions, who host No. 3 Notre Dame at noon next Sunday.
