Penn State softball: Nittany Lions drop 2 games

Penn State surrendered a four-run lead in a 9-8 loss to Longwood at the Citrus Classic on Sunday.

Taylor Abeyta hit a three-run home run for the Nittany Lions (3-8), Karlie Habitz and Lexi Knief had RBI doubles, and Habitz and Cassidy Bell each were 2-for-4 at the plate. Bell also extended her hitting streak to 22 games.

The Lancers’ Megan Baltzell clubbed a grand slam in the fourth inning and clocked a two-run game-winning homer in the sixth.

Jordan Wheatley and Macy Jones combined to pitch in the loss.

Earlier Sunday, No. 5 Texas A&M plated 12 runs in the final two innings to rally past the Nittany Lions 12-2.

Penn State was held to four singles by Mel Dumezich (15-0), who has thrown five no-hitters this season and struck out nine on Sunday. A Kasie Hatfield two-run single in the second accounted for the only Nittany Lion runs.

Dumezich also clubbed one of three home runs for the Aggies (22-1) off Penn State pitchers Macy Jones, Christy Von Pusch and Rachel Myers. Jones (3-3) took the loss.

Penn State heads to Clearwater, Fla., on Tuesday to meet Central Michigan.
