The Penn State field hockey team will open the NCAA tournament Saturday with a tall order, facing the defending national champions.
The Nittany Lions (13-5) will meet Princeton at 2 p.m. in the first round of the tournament. The game will be played at Maryland, with the top-seeded Terrapins facing either Quinnipiac or American in the other contest set for College Park, Md.
The Tigers (13-4) took the 2012 NCAA title, although the Nittany Lions won 4-3 in a meeting Sept. 15 as part of Penn State’s 12-game win streak.
The Big ten regular-season champion Nittany Lions received an at-large bid to the tournament while the Tigers are the Ivy League champs.
