Penn State dropped both ends of a doubleheader, falling 9-3 and 10-5 to Mississippi State on Saturday.
In the opener, Mississippi State scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed. Penn State drew within 4-3 on Shelby Miller’s three-run home run in the fourth inning, but the Nittany Lions manages just four total hits against Alexis Silkwood (8-0), who struck out eight.
Kristina Brackpool had two hits for Penn State (6-6). Julia Echols, Mackenzie Toler and Erika Gaul each belted homers for the Bulldogs.
The Nittany Lions led 5-3 in the second game before Mississippi State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third. The game was halted after 51/3 innings because of rain.
Alyssa VanDerveer hit a solo homer and had two hits. Brackpool (two RBIs) and Miller also had two hits.
Caroline Seitz had three hits and three RBIs and Gaul had two hits and drove in two for the Bulldogs.
The teams completed the weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m.
