Erin Pond’s two-run home run capped a big offensive afternoon as Penn State thumped Sacramento State 9-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Jessica Cummings tossed a five-hitter in the nightcap as Penn State cruised 4-0 against Loyola Marymount (11-18).
Led by four hits from Pond, the Nittany Lions pounded out 14 hits and rode stellar pitching from Marlaina Laubach in the opener.
Penn State set the tone in the bottom of the first by scoring four runs. Lexi Knief tripled and Macy Jones followed with a homer to left field. Shelby Miller was hit by a pitch and Kristina Brackpool singled before Pond ripped an RBI double. Maegan Tupinio capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.
The Nittany Lions were back at it again with three runs in the second. Jones stroked a run-scoring triple then trotted home as Brackpool blasted a two-run homer to left.
The runs were more than enough for Laubach, who allowed four hits, an unearned run, three walks and four strikeouts. Brackpool and Jones added three hits each, while Knief had two.
In the second game, Cummings (2-4) walked one and struck out four in a dominating performance.
Brackpool and Pond spanked back-to-back RBI doubles to give Penn State a 2-0 lead in the first. The Nittany Lions tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on Shannon Good’s single.
Penn State (12-12) faces Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. Wednesday in its home opener at Nittany Lion Softball Park.
