Penn State softball: Nittany Lions sweep Spartans

Penn State earned its first two Big Ten wins of the season, and extended its win streak to four straight, by sweeping a doubleheader from Michigan State 7-4 and 11-10 Saturday.

In the first game, Penn State pounded out 13 hits for the win, paced by a 3 for 4 day for Mollie Sorenson and two hits each for Macy Jones and Mia Monopoli. Monopoli’s two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning wrapped up the win, while Jones cracked a three-run home run in the first. Sorenson had a triple among her hits and Lexi Knief, Monopoli and Erin Pond all doubled.

Jessica Cummings struck out seven while giving up just two hits and no walks in four shutout innings of relief for the win, and Sarah Gutknecht belted a two-run homer for the Spartans.

The Nittany Lions pounded out 14 more hits in the second game, with a two-run homer from Jones in the top of the seventh deciding the wild contest. Jones finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Knief, Alyssa Vanderveer, Maegan Tupino and Reina Furuya all added a pair of hits

The Spartans took an early 7-1 lead through two innings, a seven-run top of the third put the Nittany Lions ahead, then Michigan State grabbed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third.

Marlaina Laubach pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out eight, for the win.

The teams close their weekend series Sunday.
