Penn State softball: Nittany Lions ‘slam’ Bucknell with offensive explosion

The Penn State softball team put on a spectacular show, complete with two grand slams, Wednesday night at Nittany Lion Softball Park.

The Nittany Lions (19-16) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, highlighted by Alyssa Vanderveer’s grand slam and pinch-hitter Kristina Brackpool’s game-winning RBI single, to beat Bucknell 9-8. They followed by hammering the Bison in the second game 13-1 in five innings, with Brackpool cracking a grand slam, to sweep the doubleheader.

Trailing 8-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh in the opener, Mollie Sorenson led off with a double to left field. Shelby Miller followed by reaching on an error and Macy Jones singled to load the bases and set the stage for Vanderveer, who blasted the ball over the right field fence. Alicia Walker then singled, moved to second base on Maegan Tupino’s sacrifice bunt and raced around to score on Brackpool’s single to right field.

Vanderveer finished 3 for 3, knocking in five runs, and Miller was 3 for 4 with both belting doubles along with Macy Jones. Marlaina Laubach pitched the final two innings and earned the win.

After plating five runs in the final inning of the opening game, Penn State scored five runs in each of the first two innings of the nightcap, highlighted by Brackpool’s slam to right field. She finished 3 for 4.

Sorenson also was 3 for 4, Miller had two hits while knocking in three runs and both ripped doubles.

Jessica Cummings earned the win, striking out five while allowing just two hits and a fifth-inning run before the game was halted by the mercy rule.

Penn State returns to Big Ten play this weekend, visiting Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday.
