Penn State softball: Nittany Lions split with Wisconsin

Kristina Brackpool’s two-run single capped a four-run rally in the top of the sixth as Penn State knocked off Wisconsin 11-8 in the opening game of a Big Ten softball doubleheader on Friday. The Badgers picked up their first conference win in the night cap with a wild 14-13 victory.

The Nittany Lions (20-16 overall, 3-4 Big Ten) trailed by three runs on two separate occasions in the contest, but fought back. Trailing 8-7, Penn State got an RBI double to center field from Shelby Miller to tie the game and went ahead on Alyssa VanDerveer’s sacrifice fly. Brackpool, who had homered earlier in the contest, followed with her single to left field to plate two runs.

Wisconsin threatened in the bottom of the seventh by loading the bases, but Macy Jones struck out Kelsey Jenkins to end the game.

Lexi Knief had four hits and scored three runs to lead the Penn State offense. Jones and Brackpool each had two hits and three RBIs, while Molly Sorenson added two hits.

Jones earned the win in relief, allowing 10 hits, but just one unearned run in four innings. Marissa Mersch had five hits and drove in three for the Badgers (13-19, 0-6).
