Penn State’s Alyssa VanDerveer picked up a pair of awards Monday, honored as both the Big Ten’s Freshman and Player of the Week.
The freshman catcher had a big week in games against Bucknell and Wisconsin, finishing 6 for 10 with 11 RBIs and eight runs scored. She blasted three home runs, including grand slams against both the Bison and Badgers, and added a double.
She is the first Nittany Lion to win a weekly conference honor since Cassidy Bell was the Player of the Week in February 2013.
With a forecast for wet weather, Penn State’s home doubleheader against Ohio State, scheduled for Tuesday, has been moved to Wednesday with the first of the two games scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
