Penn State softball: Nittany Lions top Rutgers on Senior Day

The Penn State softball team rode the top of its lineup to a 12-6 win over Rutgers at Beard Field on Saturday.

The first five Nittany Lion hitters combined for nine hits and had 12 RBIs in the victory on Senior Day. Shelby Miller went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, leadoff hitter Lexi Knief finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Alyssa VanDerveer was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.

Nittany Lion starting pitcher Jessica Cummings allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits in five innings to get the win. Dresden Maddox allowed five runs in 22/3 innings to take the loss for Rutgers (26-16, 10-9 Big Ten).

VanDerveer’s one-out, solo homer started an eight-run second inning for the Nittany Lions, who added four runs in the third to build a 12-3 lead.

Jackie Bates hit her 35th career home run in the seventh inning to become Rutgers’ all-time leader.

The teams finish the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
