Penn State softball: Nittany Lions complete sweep of Rutgers with extra-inning victory

Penn State’s Erin Pond hit an inside-the-park home run to send the game to extra innings and Lexi Knief singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Nittany Lion softball team to a 4-3 win over Rutgers on Sunday.

The Nittany Lions faced a 3-0 deficit going to the bottom of the seventh inning at Beard Field, but Pond erased that deficit with a three-run, inside-the-park home run to right field.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Penn State’s Kristina Brackpool doubled to center field with one out in the ninth. Alicia Walker replaced Brackpool as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring the game-winning run on Knief’s single.

The Nittany Lions completed a series sweep of Rutgers and extended their winning streak to four games.

Marlaina Laubach pitched 8 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits to earn the win. Penn State starter Macy Jones gave up two runs on four hits and got one out in the first inning.

Alyssa Landrith allowed four runs on seven hits in a complete game in the loss for Rutgers (26-17, 10-10 Big Ten).

The Nittany Lions (27-24, 9-11) take on Pittsburgh on the road at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
