Penn State softball: No. 3 Michigan hands Nittany Lions loss to finish regular season

Penn State finished the regular season with a 10-2 loss to No. 3 Michigan in five innings Sunday.

Nittany Lion pitcher Jessica Cummings lasted 12/3 innings in the loss, giving up six runs on five hits and walking two. Megan Betsa allowed two runs on one hit in four innings to earn the win for Michigan (48-6, 21-2 Big Ten).

Penn State’s Kristina Brackpool hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the Nittany Lions runs.

Penn State (28-27, 9-14) returns to action as the No. 9 seed against No. 8 seed Maryland in the first round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday. The game is set to start at 2:30 p.m.

The winner will advance to face top-seeded Michigan in the quarterfinals Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Other first-round matchups include: No. 5 Illinois vs. No. 12 Purdue; No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 11 Indiana; No. 7 Rutgers vs. No. 10 Iowa, No. 4 Northwestern, No. 3 Nebraska and No. 2 Minnesota have first-round byes.
