Penn State softball: Nittany Lions beat Maryland in first round of conference tournament

The Penn State softball team scored a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 10-6 win over Maryland in the first round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday.

Lexi Knief went 3 for 4 and scored four runs and Mollie Sorenson finished 3 for 5 and scored three runs to lead the ninth-seeded Nittany Lions. Marlaina Laubach pitched four innings of relief, allowing four runs on eight hits to earn the win for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions (29-27) advance to take on top-seeded Michigan in the quarterfinals Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Eighth-seeded Maryland (27-27) took a 2-0 lead after two innings before the Nittany Lions tied it in the third on Macy Jones’ two-run double.

Alyssa VanDerveer’s two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth inning for Penn State. The Nittany Lions then added three runs in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead into the bottom half.

VanDerveer and Jones each drove in three runs.

Maryland’s Kaitlyn Schmeiser took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in seven innings.
