The Penn State softball team proved to be no match for top-seeded Michigan in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals Friday.
The ninth-seeded Nittany Lions fell 16-1 in five innings to the Wolverines, who exploded for 13 runs in the second inning. Penn State’s Kristina Brackpool recorded the team’s lone hit, a home run in the second inning.
Penn State finished the season 29-28.
Michigan pounded out 10 hits in its 13-run inning, highlighted by Sierra Romero’s grand slam. Romero finished 3 for 3, scored twice and drove in six runs. Aidan Falk went 3 for 3, scored three runs and drove in three runs for the Wolverines (49-6).
Michigan’s Megan Betsa allowed one run on one hit in three innings to earn the win.
Penn State’s Jessica Cummings allowed seven runs on seven hits in 11/3 innings to take the loss.
