Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions split doubleheader with Gardner Webb

Penn State scored three times in the top of the ninth inning in Game 1 to give new coach Rob Cooper his first win as the Nittany Lions split a season-opening doubleheader against Gardner Webb on Sunday.

The Nittany Lions won the opener 6-4. The contest was tied a 3-3 entering the ninth. Penn State loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and an error. Cleanup-up hitter J.J. White smacked a two-run double to right to give the Nittany Lions the lead. Tyler Kendall added an RBI single later in the frame.

Reliever Jack Anderson (1-0) gave up an RBI single to J.J. Nazzaro in the bottom of the ninth, but earned the victory. Starter T.J. Jann allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in seven strong innings.

Kendall and Ryan Richter had two hits each. White drove in three runs. Nazzaro had three hits for the Bulldogs.

Penn State dropped the nightcap 7-3 as Gardner Webb rapped 12 hits.

Nittany Lions starter Nick Hedge lasted just three innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs. White had two of Penn State’s eight hits. Scott Coleman and Henry Rundio each had three hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. The teams will play again at 1 p.m. Monday.
