Penn State men’s basketball: Nittany Lions season comes to close with no postseason bids

The Penn State men’s basketball team’s season is over.

The Nittany Lions did not receive a bid to the National Invitation Tournament, and they will not compete in the College Basketball Invitational.

“Wrapping up at 18-16, #PSUMBB has the fifth winning season since 2000 after not falling below .500 all year,” the program tweeted Sunday night.

Penn State finished the season with an 18-16 record after picking up wins over Nebraska and Iowa and falling to Purdue in the Big Ten tournament last week. The Nittany Lions went 4-14 and finished 13th in the Big Ten.

Illinois is the lone Big Ten team in the 32-team NIT field, which was announced Sunday night.

Penn State’s D.J. Newbill was named to the Big Ten all-tournament team Sunday. Newbill averaged 21.0 points per game in three games for the Nittany Lions.

Newbill was joined on the all-tournament team by Michigan State teammates Branden Dawson and Travis Trice and Wisconsin teammates Frank Kaminsky and Nigel Hayes.
