Penn State men’s basketball: Former assistant, Earl, named VMI’s head coach

VMI has hired former Penn State assistant coach Dan Earl as its men’s basketball coach.

Earl was introduced Monday as the successor to Duggar Baucom, the winningest coach in Keydets’ history. Baucom resigned March 30 to take the same job at VMI’s arch rival, The Citadel.

Earl had been the associate head coach at Navy since 2011-12. Before that, he was an assistant coach under Ed DeChellis from 2006-11. The Nittany Lions reached the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years in the 2010-11 season, losing to Temple in the opening round.

Earl’s duties as associate head coach included serving as recruiting director, scheduling, scouting of opponents, game preparation and player development.

He becomes the 28th head coach in VMI’s basketball history.
