This shouldn’t surprise anyone, but Penn State star running back Saquon Barkley has garnered more offseason praise.
Barkley — as well as tight end Mike Gesicki and safety Marcus Allen — earned spots on Athlon Sports’ Preseason All-America teams, which were released Tuesday afternoon.
Barkley was a first-teamer, while Gesicki and Allen were named to the second and third teams, respectively.
Only six college football squads had more players named to Athlon’s list — Alabama, Washington, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Pitt.
Ohio State had five, including quarterback J.T. Barrett. The Buckeyes signal-caller was on the fourth team, following Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Southern California’s Sam Darnold and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson.
Penn State quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender Trace McSorley was left off the list.
Penn State was tied with Iowa for second-most players on the list among Big Ten schools.
Barkley was the Nittany Lions’ headliner, joining LSU’s Derrius Guice with first-team honors. The Penn State back beat out the likes of Oregon’s Royce Freeman and Georgia’s Nick Chubb.
Gesicki was behind only Wisconsin’s Troy Fumagalli at tight end, and Allen took a backseat to Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick, Florida State’s Derwin James, Northwestern’s Godwin Igwebuike and Virginia’s Quin Blanding.
Barkley, Gesicki, Allen and the rest of the Nittany Lions open their 2017 campaign on Sept. 2 against Akron.
