Breaking: Sean Clifford will start at QB for Penn State football against Illinois

Penn State redshirt senior quarterback Sean Clifford will start Saturday against Illinois. Clifford was announced as a starter prior to the game and was seen warming up with other starters before kickoff.

The start comes after Clifford left the team’s 23-20 loss to Iowa with an undisclosed injury in the second quarter.

He was replaced by redshirt sophomore quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson in the game who struggled to the tune of 7-for-23 passing and two interceptions.

Franklin previously said Roberson and true freshman Christian Veilleux would split reps this week leading up to the game, but Clifford took reps during the portion of practice open to the media Wednesday and Franklin said that wasn’t his first participation of the week.

Penn State is 5-1 heading into the matchup with Illinois, with a game against Ohio State looming on Oct. 30.
