December 17, 2012 11:53 PM

Penn State has produced three nominees for the Dapper Dan Charities Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, presented to the figures from the Pittsburgh area who have made the most outstanding accomplishment in sports in the past year.

Nittany Lion football coach Bill O’Brien is among six nominees for the Dapper Dan Sportsman of the Year and the only coach among the nominees. O’Brien guided Penn State to an 8-4 record in his first season at the helm of the program.

Among the nominees for Sportswoman of the Year are Christa Harmotto and Taylor Schram. Harmotto, who is from Aliquippa and is a 2009 Penn State graduate, helped the U.S. national volleyball team to a silver medal at the Olympics last summer. Schram, a junior from Canonsburg, helped the U.S. under-20 national team to the gold medal at the World Cup last summer and the Nittany Lion soccer team to the national championship game earlier this month.

Fan voting will be used in helping select the winner.
