Penn State football: Hackenberg named Big Ten Freshman of the Year

Christian Hackenberg was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year the conference announced Tuesday night.

Statistically, the 18-year-old quarterback finished his first season among the Big Ten leaders. His 2,955 passing yards were good for third while he finished second in completions (231) and threw 20 touchdowns, one shy of the league best.

“Things started clicking for me, I think, the last month here,” Hackenberg said following Penn State’s season finale against Wisconsin. “Understanding the entirety of the offense, the run game, the pass game and coverages.”

Hackenberg earned the honor a day after he was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season after he helped lead Penn State to a 31-24 win over No. 15 Wisconsin on Saturday. Hackenberg completed 21 of 30 passes for 339 yards and a career-best four touchdowns in the win.
