Reports from NFL.com on Thursday night have Penn State coach Bill O’Brien as one of the Houston Texans’ top candidates for their head coaching vacancy, accoording to sources familiar with the franchise’s process, and that O’Brien has been invited to interview with Houston sometime after the Christmas holiday.
According to the website, NFL executives view O’Brien, the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator, as a viable candidate to leap back into the NFL ranks after his buyout was reduced by Penn State from $13 million to $6.5 million in March. The reduction was first made public in June.
With the reduced buyout, O’Brien’s candidacy has become more attractive. League insiders have also reported that former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith has already interviewed with the Texans.
