ERIEPenn State fired 35 shots, but was unable to stop a potent Mercyhurst attack in a 7-0 loss at the Mercyhurst Ice Center Friday afternoon.
Mercyhurst (11-5-2, 4-2-1 CHA) struck first on a Kaleigh Chippy effort just 5:48 into the contest. The lead doubled a little over six minutes later with a Jenna Dingeldein goal at12:08. The first-period scoring was capped by Christine Bestland as she scored with 56 seconds remaining. The Lakers outshot Penn State 16-8 in the opening frame.
The Laker onslaught continued into the first minute of the second period as Chippy tallied a power-play goal just 43 seconds in. Paige Horton padded the lead 8:08 into the period before Bestland added her second goal of the game at 11:47 for a 6-0 advantage. MU led in shots 16-9 for a 32-17 edge through two periods.
The third period was not as lively for either team as Mercyhurst posted one goal as Bestland completed the hat trick with 4:38 remaining in the contest. Penn State owned an 18-9 edge in shots during the third period, but Amanda Makela (35 saves) was there for all the stops.
