Penn State women’s hockey: Nittany Lions finish off sweep of RIT

Celine Whitlinger notched 27 saves as the Penn State women’s hockey team completed a weekend sweep of the Rochester Institute of Technology with a 3-1 triumph at Pegula Ice Arena on Sunday.

The contest was scoreless after one period.

Penn State (12-9-3, 7-4-1 CHA) took the lead for good on Laura Bowman’s shorthanded goal, her 12th tally of the season, 8:49 into the second period.

The Nittany Lions extended the margin to 2-0 in the third period as Bella Sutton netted a power play goal on assists from Kelly Seward and Amy Peterson at the 9:16 mark.

Cassie Clayton brought RIT (8-14-3, 1-8-1) to within a goal with 7:29 left, but PSU iced it a little more than a minute later as Hannah Hoenshell converted on an assist from Shannon Yoxheimer.

RIT outshot Penn State 28-24.

The Nittany Lions travel to New Hampshire for games on Friday and Saturday.
