Penn State women’s hockey: Mercyhurst blanks Nittany Lions

Mercyhurst captured its fourth consecutive CHA regular-season title with a 4-0 rout of second-place Penn State on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions (15-13-4 overall, 9-7-2 CHA) are now tied for second in the league with 20 points. Mercyhurst (22-7-3, 13-4-1) has 27 points.

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers took control. Shelby Bram opened the scoring 9:34 into the period. Emily Janiga followed with another score at the 17:49 mark.

The contest stayed that way until Janiga’s 26th goal of the season made it 3-0 with 4:02 left. Jenna Dingeldein capped the scoring with her 17th goal of the season, an empty netter coming with one second left.

Mercyhurst outshot Penn State 40-18. Goalie Celine Whitlinger stopped 36 shots for the Nittany Lions. Amanda Makela had 18 saves for the Lakers.

Penn State concludes it regular season with a two-game home series against Robert Morris, beginning Friday at the Pegula Ice Arena.
